When Was the Best Clothing Era?

When looking back on the styles from years past, which do you think was the best? I think I like the style now. It’s taking bits and pieces of style from decades past, and tailoring it to fit this modern generation. Other than that, I think that the 70’s and 20’s had the best fashion.

Let’s Eat!
Love seafood? Love food period? Well, there’s one place that you absolutely have to try: Danver’s Restaurant on Kirby Pkwy. They’ve recently added seafood to their menu, and I can’t be any more excited! Being that I a down-home-southern-girl, I love some good fried fish. Whiting, Tilapia, or Catfish seasoned to perfection and fried to a good crisp that’s just enough to leave the inside flavorful and juicy will make my day! And that’s exactly what I got when I went to Danver’s.
While there, I tried the new Southern Style Catfish and Shrimp Basket. For only about $8, you get three jumbo shrimp and a decent sized catfish filet with a baked potato loaded how you like with garnishes from their famous salad bar. I always load mine with bacon, cheese, chives, and sour cream. Yum!
Well, needless to say, I was not disappointed when I bit into the catfish. It had just the right amount of crunch to it and burst with flavor with every chew. It was as if the spices were embedded right into the fish. The shrimp were great too! Though, there aren’t too many ways you could mess up shrimp unless it’s too touch or taste too seafood-y. Luckily, it was just how I like it: fried hard. (you may have to ask for this though). Plus, they were huge! They weren’t kidding when they said jumbo.
All in all, I had a very nice experience, and I will definitely be back.
Have you ever eaten here? Where was the best seafood you ever had?

Routing for the Home Team Has Never Tasted So Great!
Once again, Food Network has chosen to feature Memphis Area residents on the popular food related channel. Many of our local restaurant’s specialties have been featured, with showcases the rich, and flavorful culture of this fair city.
“Down Home with the Neelys,” which stars Neely’s Bar-B-Que owners and Memphis residents Pat and Gina Neely, is now in its seventh season, with an eighth scheduled to begin filming in April.
Soon, two more Memphis chefs will be showing their culinary prowess on the network. They are Kelly English of Restaurant Iris and Viking Cooking School instructor Gail Churinetz.
Churinetz, a Germantown resident, will appear on “Ultimate Recipe Showdown” with Guy Fieri. The show airs on March 14 at 8 p.m. with Churinetz and her Crawfish Andouille Sausage Pizza battling against contestants from New York, Florida and Missouri.
English will be on “The Best Thing I Ever Ate,” which is co-hosted by native Memphian Claire Robinson, at 9 p.m. Friday. He says that being seen on the Food Network “is something everyone wants to do.”
I think this is great! What better residents than Memphis’ own to showcase on Food Network? I can’t tell you of how many great restaurants I’ve found in town! I find it so refreshing because I get SO tired of the same chain restaurants day in and day out.
What about you? What’s your favorite restaurant in the area?
Who Needs a Headboard?

Think about it MHC. Sometimes, it’s just time for a new look. Have you ever wondered the functionality of your bed’s headboard? Sure, it can be asthetically pleasing, serve as a back rest when reading, and if a shelf is attached, it can be a nifty storage space. However, many times, the headboards can get kind of cumbersome and take up space, so why not forego the headboard all together?
It leads to a cleaner, more classic look. It also gives you more creative freedom to decorate the wall that your bed rest against. Check out some pictures for examples.
I like the no headboard look. It adds an illusion of space to the room, while giving me endless possiblities for changing the rest of the furniture without having to worry about if it matches the headboard or not.
What do you think? Would you go without a headboard?

Why is it STILL so cold?

Ok, MHC. So Winter may be pretty and all, what with snow falling and being able to wear snazzy sweaters and the like, but come on! I’m ready for it to be warm again! (Though there’s nothing like cuddling up in a warm, fresh out the dryer comforter in the middle of winter, with a cup of hot cocoa
)
Monday is March 1st. March is a time that I always equate with Spring, because, well, Spring starts in March. March 20th to be exact. Being that I’m a down home southern gal, I’m used to warm weather and blazing hot summers. So below freezing temperatures are hardly ever welcomed. And that’s exactly what Memphis woke up to, today!
Even though my allergies will begin to flare up soon, I can’t wait to see the fresh, new baby buds of Spring to blossom.
Are you ready for warmer weather too, or is the Winter season your cup of tea?
Quotation of the Day

A successful man is one who can lay a firm foundation with the bricks others have thrown at him. ~ David Brinkley
This is a quote that I hold true to, and one that has appeared many times in my own life. No matter what you want to do with your life, be it favorable or unfavorable, you will always have nay-sayers. Here is where the bricks are thrown. There are just some folks out there who’s whole life is based on the enjoyment that they get out of telling others that they ‘can’t do it’. This is where your will power, self preservation, and determination kick in.
No one can tell you what you cannot do. If there is something out there that you want to do, DO IT!! Take those bricks that those with ill will sent your way, and build the foundation to the steps or plan that will eventually leave you to success. Many times, those who criticized or down played your intentions are only left holding that brick in the end, because it’s all that they could hold on to.
What are some of your daily mottos?
Do You Fly Stand-by?
February 17, 2010 by akemp

A couple of months ago, a friend and I had a trip planned to fly to Kentucky to see a mutual friend. The friend said that he could get us a deal, seeing as he had a friend who worked for the airline and that we could use his buddy pass. Since the friend worked at the airline, my girlfriend and I thought that we were getting a deal.
Now, I didn’t know much about flying, still don’t. The only other time that I flew was when I was seven and going to New Jersey to participate in the Miss America Pageant Parade. (Heights and I don’t get along well). Well, everything went fine flying stand-by and what not…that is, until we were coming back. With it being a Monday, we figured a stand-by flight into Atlanta from Charlotte where we had a layover would be a piece of cake. WRONG.
It took us a full DAY to get on a plane, seeing that there were multiple stand-by passengers ahead of us in the line to board a plane, and that they had higher priority up than buddy pass carriers. That didn’t make sense to me at all, seeing as I would think an employee’s pass would have more merit. Long story short, we were mad, tired, and hungry, and vowed never to fly stand-by again.
What about you? Have you ever flown stand-by? Do you have any horror stories?
Wolf River Greenway Trail Groundbreaking!

Please attend this important milestone event and support the Wolf River Greenway!!!!
Today, at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 10th, Memphis Mayor A.C. Wharton will lead the groundbreaking for the first leg of the Memphis Park Services 22 mile, $30 million, Wolf River Greenway trail system. A large turnout would demonstrate the widespread support for this project and could help to insure, and perhaps expedite, the Wolf River Greenway‘s construction. The completion of Memphis’ Wolf River Greenway will provide an important public realm amenity for one of America’s unhealthiest communities.
The Wolf River Greenway will benefit and connect Memphis’s many diverse neighborhoods, Downtown’s Riverfront Parks, Shelby Farms Park, the Wolf River Wildlife Area at Collierville and many other public parks, facilities and schools in the river corridor. One day, Greenway trail users will be able to bike ride, walk, or run while meandering along the Wolf River 30 miles from Downtown to Collierville/Arlington Rd., and never cross a street.
We plan to organize a short walk on Germantown’s nearby Wolf River Greenway afterwards.
Please join us to celebrate and to demonstrate your support for The City of Memphis Park Services’ and our community’s new Wolf River Greenway!
DIRECTIONS TO CEREMONY: Wednesday’s dedication will occur at Walnut Grove and Humphrey’s Blvd., near the new Walnut Grove Wolf River Bridge. Parking is available on the north side of Walnut Grove. You may use http://www.mapquest.com/ and this address: 40 N. Humphreys Blvd., Memphis, TN 38111-3537 to find the location. The parking lot can be reached by exiting Walnut Grove at Humphreys Blvd., and then turning northwest onto N. Humphreys Blvd. (rather than southeast past Baptist Hospital). The parking lot is immediately west of Humphreys Blvd. (we will have signs). You can then walk across Humphreys Blvd. (this side of Humphreys Blvd. dead ends, and it is lightly traveled), and then hike the short greenway path under the Walnut Grove Bridge to the groundbreaking site.
Note: in case of inclement weather we can gather under the bridge.
We look forward to having everyone out for their support of the Wolf River Greenway!
