Hey Madison Humphreys Center! Have you been looking for a way to help and contribute to the thousands of charities and causes in the world? Well, your dedicated, community oriented and helpful Madison Humphreys Center Community is making this easy for you.
MHC will be hosting a Blood Drive with LifeBlood on Saturday, July 24 from 10 am to 2 pm. For more information and to reserve your spot, call the office at (901) 747-9000. Trust me, it’s amazing knowing that something as simple as sitting in a chair for about 15 minutes will save someone’s life. It’s also completely gratifying.
Don’t be nervous when giving blood; I know that needles can be scary. But I’ve found that as long as you don’t look at the bag or the needle, you’ll be okay. Best way to avoid it, divert your attention elsewhere. If you need more advice, there are many tips on the internet and from previous donors to help but your mind at ease.
So, on July 24 from 10 am to 2 pm, donate blood and save a life with Madison Humphrey Center.

Hey MHC! Take a look over to the right hand side and vote in our newly updated poll: “Who do you think will win the NBA Championship?” Right now, it’s down to the Magic, Celtics, Lakers, and Suns. I’m thinking it’s going to be another classic matchup with the Celtics and the Lakers. What do you think?
Opinion Post: What guys think about on the first date

Hey MHC! This question goes out to the guys! What do you typically expect to find out about a girl on the first date? A first date is a crucial step in any budding relationship, as you’re finding out little things about a new person, and seeing if there is potential for a second date and beyond.
So what do you take into consideration? Her food selection? Her likes and dislikes? Her views on certain topics? I’m not asking you for any trade secrets (or for any information over PG), but I do want to know what’s going on in those handsome little heads of yours.
So, what’s on your mind???

Is your office space kind of drab? Want a way to perk up your day? Well, why not pick a nice plant to liven up your space? Plants add a homey feel to your office space, as well as cleaning the air of certain pollutants. How do you pick the perfect plant for your area? Just follow the guidelines below, and you’ll have a mini Amazon rainforest in no time:
- Assess your office lighting
- Decide how much space will be designated for the plant.
- Estimate how much care you’ll be able to devote to the plant.
- Determine the purpose of your plants.
- Set your plant budget
- Research plants
- Some plants (like many orchids and bonsai) have very specific light, humidity, and temperature needs
- Purchase your plants
Do you have a plant for your office? What would you recommend?
Stiff Back?

Sitting down all day can easily lead to a stiff back. Believe me, I’ve been there, I know. For me, no amount of stretching, twisting, or turning helps me out. I’ve come to find out that I’ve been doing these ’stretches’ completely wrong.
I’ve found a number of stretches and exercises that you can do to help relieve the pain.
Most times, back stiffness will go away on it’s own, but for the times that it doesn’t:
Lower back rotation
The SpineUniverse website recommends this stretch because it helps release stiffness in the lower back and hips, making spine mobility and rotation easier. Lie on the back with your knees bent. Slowly bring legs to one side of your body, being sure to keep the knees together. Be sure that feet stay on the ground. Hold this stretch for three to five seconds. Squeeze the abdominal muscles while you work the legs over to the opposite side of the body. Repeat this exercise five to 10 times per side. Livestrong.com
Do you have any other tips to relieving a stiff back?

Since it’s Friday, I’ve decided to give everyone a little 3 minute break from their normal routine. If you have the time, check out this video. It’s actually quite amazing. The animator takes pixelated old school arcade games, and brings them to life in the real world. Watch what happens!

Giving Back Always Makes a Difference

At some point in your life, you should give to those less fortunate to yourself. It makes you feel really well to know that you have helped someone who may or may not have received that help without you. Giving food to a homeless person lets you know that for a short time, they won’t be hungry. Visiting a children’s hospital brings a smile to many faces, and brings them joy. No matter what you do, whether large or small, you’re making a difference.
That’s what the group of players chosen for the McDonald’s All-American High School Basketball Game did yesterday morning, promptly at 11 am at the Columbus Ronald McDonald House. The group of high schoolers, including a handful of Memphis commits engaged in a myriad of activities: the athletes baked cookies, played basketball with the kids, read from children’s books, and took various tours of the home to get a feel of what the children’s lives are like.
Though only there for a short time, the athletes really brightened the kids’ day. You can do the same with kids around the Memphis area. You don’t have to work with only kids, or people in general however. There are plenty of parks that need restoring or houses that need to be built for Habitat for Humanity. So pick an organization today and get cracking!
Do you volunteer? I would love to know which organizations you give your time to, and I’m sure others would as well! The more the merrier!

Enjoy the Great Outdoors

Spring is here! (Kind of). That means that it’s time to break out of your winter hibernation and embrace the sun again! What better way to do this than by hitting up Shelby Farms Park Conservatory?
You can cycle, skate, or walk along the Patriot Lake or Chicksaw Trail, and become one with the beauty of nature once again. You can also go horseback riding at the Shelby Farms Stables. Now, this is something that I would like to do, seeing as how I haven’t ridden a horse since I was a child.
Whatever you do, just make sure you’re outside enjoying your spring after that brutally cold winter!
Do you frequent Shelby Farms Park Conservatory?

When Was the Best Clothing Era?

When looking back on the styles from years past, which do you think was the best? I think I like the style now. It’s taking bits and pieces of style from decades past, and tailoring it to fit this modern generation. Other than that, I think that the 70’s and 20’s had the best fashion.
What do you think?
I’m Dreaming of the Perfect Getaway…
Yes, I’m dreaming of perfect white sand beaches and crystal clear, teal blue water, but my wallet is my wake up call. Initially, I know that I cannot take a spur of the moment trip to Aruba, but there are some travel sites out there that are trying to make traveling possible for the wallet weary traveler.
How much do you think that a night’s stay at a luxury beach in Costa Rica would cost? A good arm and a leg, right? Well I’ve found that a one night stay at the Hotel Banana Azul in Costa Rica is only $69 a night. Can you believe that? The Hotel Banana Azul is a 14 room retreat on a black sand strand, with tropical impressions dominating every room for a very laid back feel. The price is great, it’s just airfare and immunization that’ll get you.
Another location that’s right in the US is Ka’awa Loa Plantation & Guesthouse in Hawaii. This luxury resort is priced at $125 a night. You can’t stay at some of our local luxury hotels for that price! For $125 a night, you’re privileged to panoramic views of Kealakekua Bay. A breakfast of eggs, fresh star fruit, and coffee grown on site is served on the 2,000-square-foot wraparound porch. The nearby lava-rock beaches, Kealakekua and Puuhonua O Honaunau, are known for the best snorkeling on the Big Island. This is mainly for those who want to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life, and just want to relax in this 5 bedroom B&B.
As the Spring and Summer months are quickly approaching, I’m beginning to plan my vacation now. With the way these prices are looking, I don’t think that my wallet will cry too much. : Hey, you’re entitled to treating yourself every now and then right?
What about you? Do you think that these are good deals? Where are you going for your vacation?
