Hey Madison Humphreys Center! Have you been looking for a way to help and contribute to the thousands of charities and causes in the world? Well, your dedicated, community oriented and helpful Madison Humphreys Center Community is making this easy for you.

MHC will be hosting a Blood Drive with LifeBlood on Saturday, July 24 from 10 am to 2 pm. For more information and to reserve your spot, call the office at (901) 747-9000.  Trust me, it’s amazing knowing that something as simple as sitting in a chair for about 15 minutes will save someone’s life. It’s also completely gratifying.

Don’t be nervous when giving blood; I know that needles can be scary. But I’ve found that as long as you don’t look at the bag or the needle, you’ll be okay. Best way to avoid it, divert your attention elsewhere.  If you need more advice, there are many tips on the internet and from previous donors to help but your mind at ease.

So, on July 24 from 10 am to 2 pm, donate blood and save a life with Madison Humphrey Center.

Former Celtic Joins the Grizz

Tony Allen (basketball) of the Boston Celtics

Image via Wikipedia

With all of the NBA drama surrounding LeBron James and his controversial move to the Miami Heat, it’s very easy to forget about other deals and trades happening around the NBA during this free agent duration. One such story hits our very own Memphis Grizzlies as we acquire Tony Allen from the Boston Celtics.

The Grizz have officially signed Allen for a 3 year stint. Allen, will earn $3 million for the 2010-11 season. He is expected to receive five-percent raises, making the total value of his contract about $9.5 million.

The thing is, to go through with this trade, we of course had to give up someone. That someone was swingman Ronnie Brewer, whom we acquired in February from Utah for a protected 2011 first-round pick. But this is a business right? Everyone has to do what’s best for their career and for their team. Feelings shouldn’t really be involved…right Dan Gilbert? But I digress.

Memphis decided on Allen because of the defense and toughness he could bring to the backcourt off the bench. And we all know that Memphis needed more people to perfomr off of the bench.

Let’s just hope that he, and the recent rookies acquired, do some big things for the Grizzlies this NBA season.

Memphis on the Small Screen

Or the title could read, “Memphis on the Big Screen” depending on what kind of television you have. :) For those of you who have been waiting on it for a while, “Memphis Beat” premieres tonight at 10 pm on TNT.

“Memphis Beat” revolves around a quirky Memphis police detective with an intimate connection to the city, a passion for blues music and a close relationship with his mother. Did I mention he’s an Elvis impersonator? Yeah, it’s a little cliched, but we’ll see tonight whether it works or not.

I’m actually quite amazed at all things Memphis that the show tries to incorporate, such as the music, BBQ, and infamous Beale Street. It’ll be interesting to see if they pull it off.

You can catch a sneak preview of the show on TNT.tv before it premieres tonight if you just can’t wait.

I’d love to hear your opinions on the show!

Tim Howard during USMNT practice session

It’s no doubt that Memphis is infamous. Period. Celebrities and regular people alike flock to Memphis to live; they want to be close to the heritage, music, and BBQ. :) As it turns out, Team USA goalkeeper Tim Howard – one of the best soccer goalies in the world, mind you – keeps his summer home right here!  Very cool.  After a little Googling around, I found out how he really felt about his home here…

SAM- How did you end up making your summer home in Memphis? [...]

TIM HOWARD- That’s where my wife’s from, and we don’t get a chance to spend loads of time in the states, for me its usually just a few weeks. We get to have some peace and quiet. It could have been any number of places, but that’s just the place we settled and to be honest I love it there. [Soccer By Ives]

I guess that’s just another reason to root for Team USA in the 2010 World Cup.  Their next game is this (June 18) morning at 9:00 a.m local time agains current group leader Slovenia.  You can catch on ABC or do like me and head over to the Fox and Hound Pub & Grille5101 Sanderlin Ave., 7 minutes from Madison Humphrey Center) for a World Cup breakfast and to watch it on the big screen!

A Whole New Meaning to Downward Facing Dog

Hey Madison Humphreys Center! Do we have any Yoga fans out there? If there are, how many of you like to go alone or in a group? If group yoga is for you, how about considering taking a member of your family with you? You know, of the doggy variety? Slightly confused? Read on.

Doga” – Yoga for dogs, is sweeping the nation. It’s a great way for you to exercise with your pet. Now, I don’t really see your furry friends perfecting any positions other than the downward and upward dog, but it’s a great way for you to socialize with others and let your dogs socialize with other doggie fitness nuts. In class, owners would also learn how to give their pets doggy massages. The class is mostly for the people and a little bit of the yoga for the dogs. There’s only so much you can do with dogs because they come in so many different sizes and temperaments.

At the time of writing, I can’t find a “doga” class in Memphis, but there are plenty of other ways to socialize and exercise with your dog. You can take your pooch to various dog parks including the one at Shelby Farms, or the new one they just opened at at 2599 Avery Avenue, behind the Board of Education, which is also off leash.

The concept of doggie yoga is very interesting. Now, my dog wouldn’t be able to partake because he has the attention span of a fly, but I’m sure other dogs will have a ball. As soon as I get word of classes in the Memphis area, I’ll be sure to let you know!

Is this your first time hearing of this new craze?

Want directions to the new dog park? Here you are!

Head southeast on N Humphreys Blvd. Take the 1st right onto Walnut Grove Rd. Take the 1st right onto Walnut Grove Rd. Turn left at S Hollywood St. Take the 1st left onto Avery Ave. The dog park will be on your right.

Classic Match Up: Boston Celtics vs. Los Angeles Lakers

Boston Celtics vs LA Lakers Game 2 2008 NBA Finals

Well guys, it’s that time: NBA Finals. The final two teams? LA Lakes and Boston Celtics. On one hand, I’m glad for the match up because it’s sure to be a good game. On the other hand, I wanted an underdog team to go for the finals to bring a little spontanaeity to the game. Plus I’m not a Lakers fan. :-/

There is nothing like it in professional sports, two franchises whose fates and histories, whose highs and lows are so intertwined across so many years.

So MHC, who will it be? Cast your vote on the blog poll and let us know who you’re going for!

My lunch bag

Have you ever been in the office, and really looking forward to lunch, but when you go to the shared refrigerator, your lunch has mysteriously disappeared? How heartbreaking is that? Apparently, it happens more than you may think, since there’s an article written on how to prevent it from happening again. It’s basically telling you how to catch a thief.

I don’t know if the situation is so bad in your office kitchen that you have to padlock your ziplock or put bells in the bottom of your lunch bag, but who knows, these tips may help somebody. :)

Have you ever had to deal with this problem?

Hey MHC! This question goes out to the guys! What do you typically expect to find out about a girl on the first date? A first date is a crucial step in any budding relationship, as you’re finding out little things about a new person, and seeing if there is potential for a second date and beyond.

So what do you take into consideration? Her food selection? Her likes and dislikes? Her views on certain topics? I’m not asking you for any trade secrets (or for any information over PG), but I do want to know what’s going on in those handsome little heads of yours. ;)

So, what’s on your mind???
